Christie Zhao 赵元媛 (She/Her) is a theatre director, an interdisciplinary artist, and an art leader. She currently serves as the artistic director at Yun Theatre in Seattle, Growing up in a working-class family in an industrial city in China made her acutely aware of class dynamics and her family’s position in the social whole from a very young age. She started doing theatre while attending the University of Washington because arts education was inaccessible in her hometown. She firmly believes that her purpose and responsibility as a theatre director is to document unheard struggles, make theatre more accessible, and build a space where communities can be formed and rejuvenated and where people can participate in public discourse.
